Developed in a series that explores narratives within life, death and its symbiotic relationship, “De Una Manera U Otra” is an expressive allegory on how the pursuit of work, tradition and independence can have unfortunate consequences to others. By utilizing oil sticks, a Jimador, a Mexican agricultural worker who harvests agave to make products such as tequila or mezcal, is shown working in a field. Adorned by symbols of death, vice and addiction, the jimador is unaware of the consequences of his work, despite working a field that is seen as honorable and filled with tradition. This painting is 1 of 4 paintings created in honor of Dia de los Muertos, a Mexican holiday that celebrates life and the rejoining of spirits.
